This AM I placed the phone call to the US Marshal Service to begin the process of "surrender" to federal custody. I am to serve 5 month term of incarceration as part of the sentence on my "attempted tax evasion" conviction.
Being a 56-year old, white collar criminal with arthritis, diabetes, alcoholism (in remission), and a history of bi-polar illness it will be an interesting process which I hope to document for later journalization. As I have said many times since the inception of this blawg--learn from my example. Do not do what I did. My daughter will give birth to my first Grandchild in my absence. Somehow, my wife with the support of friends and family will manage our home, and, our two teens, while continuing to be the Blond Super Lawyer.
Since I started to write this post, I received a call back from the US Marshal service. I am reporting to the US Marshal's Service locally on November 15, 2010 to begin my 5 month sentence in custody. I may or may not sporadically update the Bad Lawyer blawg depending on all the things I don't know and can't predict.
Please keep me and my family in your prayers. Thanks.
Know that you are loved and are a source of loving for many others in your life... I pray that you recognize your true vocation in the world and seek to support others who wish to gain what you have found! Your friend, R.
ReplyDeleteThanks, R. 'Spoligize for the rough draft that you read...I was writing as news was breaking. Be interested in your views of OurTown and OurState electoral results.

Please keep writing when you can--you're not alone. All my thoughts and prayers go with you and your family.
ReplyDeleteI have a question: you referenced a history of bipolar illness. I am a recovering alcoholic with a history of bipolar illness. It now appears, though, there was never an bipolar illness. It was all just alcoholism and lies, which manifested itself, in the eyes of medical practitioners and to my denial addled psyche, as bipolar. Have you experienced anything similar?

P.S. Good luck in the pokey; I had to spent a few months there myself. Not an altogether bad experience, though. Found literature (as opposed to just non-fiction) in the really wonderful library.
Thanks so much Gayle! I'll keep writing, if only the old fashioned way. As I understand it there is no Internets in federal custody, but wjk3 says literature abounds, I'm counting on it.

wjk3--
ReplyDeleteI am not a shrink, but I've read the DSM in several iterations, attended a few scholarly lectures on the subject; and, yes suffered from the disgnostic criteria so that I am consistently diagnosed with the condition over many years. My guess is that you yourself can look at the diagnostic criteria, online, but I would be very careful about self-assessment. More importantly, because you think something is the case, because you find that you might only be suffering the effects of alcoholism--I'd caution you to stay in touch with trusted professionals. One aspect of bi-polar disorder is depression which we know can be endstage "terminal," and alcoholism correlates with depression (alcolhol is a depressant.)
Please don't treat your mental health on your own. Let a professional know what you are experiencing. In fact the Big Book advises us to look to experts in their fields to treat our health and mental health issues.
Good luck, and thanks so much for sharing.

Good luck. Keep your commissary full, read and exercise.
ReplyDeleteHopefully you will be doing your time somewhere minimum-security?

...so you get out on April 15 - Tax Day.
ReplyDeleteWonderful irony.
Good luck, my man. And here's to hoping very much that you can continue to share your experiences with us. I am certain we will benefit greatly from your insights in your experiences of the coming months.
BL, I'm stuck for words. You've given me glimpses of courage and compassion I thought I'd ever witness. May the love you've delivered be dwarfed by the love you receive just around the next turn in your journey. I owe you.
ReplyDeleteI did 11 months on a felony DUI. You are going to be fine. Get a radio and prepare to catch up on your reading.
ReplyDeleteI'm just another guy passing through, so "no big whoop," but I will be praying for you and your family.
