According to the
Chicago Tribune, the sociologist Edwin Sutherland coined the term: White Collar Criminal, circa 1939, to describe acts "committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the
course of his occupation." The Tribune points out taht white-collar crime costs the U.S. some $300 billion
annually which is based on FBI statistics. At the
