Master Manipulator And His Enablers

Reporter Kimball Perry at the Cincinnati Enquirer relates the story (at the link you can watch a video of the sentencing) of the local Catholic School teacher who moved a vulnerable kid into his home and convinced her that they were married so he could rape her, repeatedly. I pass along this story, because it catches perfectly the master manipulator/pedophiles I have known, deposed, or been related to; including my father:

"The 13th of every month was the anniversary 51-year-old Salvatore 'Sam' Magro (pic, left) and his bride celebrated with outings to Mount Echo Park to renew their vows. After Magro knelt on his Delhi Township deck and proposed, the couple picked out their wedding rings then got married on the same night the bride’s older sister was wed. They lived together and had sex often. The bride skipped her prom so Magro could take her to a nice dinner.

The 'bride' was 14.

The groom, a religion teacher at Our Lady of Victory School from 2000 to 2008, was sent to prison Thursday for four years by Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge John 'Skip' West.  The girl, now 15, stood by her lawyer who read a letter she wrote about the treatment she received from a man who was like a father to her.

'I feel kind of dirty and used,' the letter noted.

Magro and his wife took the girl into their home at the beginning of the 2009-10 school year because the teen's mother cares for her four children and a grandchild, was separated, was facing surgery and couldn't properly care for the family. Jennifer Magro previously was the girl's teacher.

Quickly, Magro convinced the girl they were married and they began having sex.

'He told me that he did not love his wife and he loved me,' the girl wrote in her letter. 'It made so much sense at the time but now it makes no sense.'

Magro pleaded guilty in June to three counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in exchange for three other charges being dropped. The charges carried a maximum prison sentence of 15 years but Jack Rubenstein, Magro’s attorney, told the judge probation and intensive counseling would be more appropriate.

The girl’s family sued Magro and his wife, saying the wife’s habitual heavy drinking resulted her in passing out each night, allowing Magro and the teen to have sex. But it was revealed in court Thursday that Magro told officials he drugged his wife, making her sleep so he could have sex with the girl. Magro’s wife kicked the girl out and Magro went with her, first to a hotel for a few days and then back to the girl’s home where the sexual relationship continued.

Magro told the judge Thursday he regretted the relationship for the damage it did to the girl and his family but also to him. He no longer can teach, has lost his home and shattered his relationships with his wife of 29 years and family.

'I have lost everything that I spent a lifetime building,' a chocked-up Magro said.

Magro’s legal wife, Jennifer, asked the judge not to send her husband, who had a stroke last year, to prison, admitting 'he is indeed guilty of heinous behavior … in such a ridiculous relationship.'

Mary Sweeney, who worked with Magro when both taught at the Delhi Township school, called Magro 'a good role model for the children. The Sam that I taught with was just an honorable man,' Sweeney said."

The defendant is a maggot.  The adults who scare me are the "legal wife" and the co-worker, who characterized him as a "good role model for children."  It's the latter attitude that permeated the Catholic hierarchy when they first were confronted with the cases of clergy sex abuse.  This is astounding stupidity and misplaced values, and it cost the Church its authority.

Dateline: Paris, France--Roman Polanski, France's favorite pedophile has instructed his attorneys to file a motion asking the California Superior Court to "go ahead and senctence [him.]"  According to E! online  Polanski asked Judge Peter Espinoza for a long-distance decision.  Here's betting that if the Judge grants Mr. Polanski's wish and sentences Polanski to jail, our Polish pal willl promptly book the next flight to LA, uh huh.  Good luck with that one.

Dateline: Toronto, Canada--Texas mom faces cybersex charges in Texas for seducing a 15-16 year old greater-Toronto area teen that she met online playing World of Warcraft.  The Boys at "Bucks this AM, were abuzz about this story.  In Canada the age of consent for sex is 16, this wacky Houston, Texas mom, Lauri Price, 42, met the boy online when the Canadian youth was 15, she recently flew up to Canada the two enjoyed an orgy of video gaming,and, well an orgy.  My pals ask, why is this a crime?  Apparently it was not, in Canada but the cybersex in the US with the minor were separate criminal acts.  Nice Mom.  For more:  the Star.com.

Dateline:  London, England--The Daily Mail online is reporting on the Bad Sword Swallower, see pic who was by his wife (also in pic!) standing in a trance entering the fifth hour.  It's a relief to see other perfectly normal professionals like myself experiencing unfortunate outcomes.  I am not alone in my Badness.

Stop Ignoring Evidence of Crimes Against Women and Children

Yesterday, I talked about several situations where the evidence suggested that something wasn't right, too often that evidence, the evidence of something wrong, something fishy--is ignored.   I was talking to my friend Charlie the other morning and he thinks it's because the evidence of something wrong, often very wrong is not understood and he recounts the apocryphal story of the aboriginal peoples who upon first encountering Christopher Columbus did not see the ships--because as Charlie says they had no neuro pathways for what their eyes were registering, or to put it another way, the native witnesses had no context for the ships that loomed on the horizon.  While this may have been true for the aboriginal islanders who first encountered Columbus--I think this is bullshit on a lot of levels.  We don't see the evidence in front of us because we are lazy--and, evidence of wrong doing means we have a duty to do something that takes us out of our comfort zone.

Once again a town learns that the trusted teacher, volunteer police officer, beloved soccer coach,  is a serial rapist see, http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2009/nov/15/city-wrestles-its-silence/  The Las Vegas Sun reports that the suburban town of Boulder City Nevada is dealing with revelation that many, many of its children were molested, raped, and filmed in explicit sex acts with Charles "Rick" Rogers.  Rogers who was arrested last April may have been actively molesting boys for 15 years.  Some victims found on explicit films seized by police at the time of Roger's arrest were as young as 10 years of age.

Hundreds of victims?  Undoubtedly.

How does this happen?  Why?

Why?  Goddamnit, why?

I don't mean, Rick Rogers, he is one more pedophile that fell off the pervert tree--how is it that the parents, the aunts and uncles, the teachers, the doctors, the adults in this town ignored what had to have been overwhelming evidence of these crimes being committed against their children?  I want to know where the screw is loose.

I saw it with the priests, but with the priests you could say well, these parishioners were all in Father's thrall.   Or Father was inadvertent, or misunderstood, or the poor man.  And it was so much easier to cover up for Father, move him around when people began talking.

But this guy!  A single man, with a passion for being with young boys!  The physical evidence was in your children's clothing.  What aren't you getting, Boulder City?

Elsewhere there is a great deal of agony and outpouring of anger in Cleveland, Ohio right now with the discovery of the serial killing of, at last count, 11 women.    These women were lured from the streets, raped and strangled and left to rot, the stench filling the streets--no response from the adults, the building inspectors, the police.  See:  http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/11/cleveland_woman_says_police_fa.html

Are we not neighbors, are we not brothers and sisters?  Don't we owe something to one another, to our students, our families, to our children.  Are we all so selfish that we can't spare a moment to ask ourselves are my children safe?  Are my children in a safe place?

We need to stop ignoring the evidence of crimes against women and our children.  We need to get out of our comfort zone on so many levels--that abandoned house two doors down, why aren't we recognizing that it presents an obligation to be vigilant that it not be used for criminal activity.  Gee, what would it take to cut its grass, to pick up the circulars, the trash, to report the comings and goings of non-residents? There are so many little things that we can do in the compass of twenty-four hours to make a difference not only in our individual world, but in the larger community without doing a whole lot.
