Driving Distracted: the Manicure

A Lake Geneva, Illinois woman is on trial for vehicular homicide for driving while painting her nails.  According to the report at the  Chicago Tribune, Lora Hunt (pic, left) killed Anita Zaffke (pic, right)  while hurtling down the highway at 50 mph applying nail polish.

Crash scene photographs show red nail polish splattered all over the dashboard of Ms. Hunt's car.  Ms. Zaffke was operating a motorcycle and presumably killed instantly by the impact.  According to the prosecutor, Ms. Hunt saw the light at the intersection ahead turn yellow and she continued to paint her nails while pressing the brake pedal.  It turns out, distracted as she was Ms. Hunt missed the brake pedal and was pressing the accelerator instead.
